Overview
The compact Alpha
The 4' × 4' is the smallest table in the Alpha 5/8" series — a 48" × 48" fixturing surface with the same plates, frame and legs as the 10' × 5'. Ø5/8" holes on 2" centers run across the top and down all four 6" sides, so you can clamp square to any face without tooling up from inside the table.
The top is a set of reversible P20 plates, heat-treated to 58–62 HRC and nitrided, bolted to a CNC-machined frame; the sides are Q345B plates at 50–55 HRC. Four 3.3" square legs bolt to the frame — fixed, adjustable, or adjustable on locking casters — and every leg carries the same 5/8" holes for fixturing accessories.

Every leg carries Ø5/8" holes on 2" centers down the tube for fixturing accessories, and bolts to the frame through a 5.35" flange with four M12 bolts — swap to a different leg later without touching the tabletop.
How it works
Clamp to any face,
flip it when it wears
The table is a fixture, not just a bench. Five machined faces, plates you can turn over, and legs you set once and forget.

Clamp to any face
The same Ø5/8" holes run across the top and down all four sides. Set a stop or a clamp against a side plate instead of building it up from inside the table — the top stays free for the part.

Flip a worn plate
Undo the self-locating bolts, lift the plate, turn it 180° and bolt it back. The other face becomes the working surface. Replace only the plate that needs it, not the whole top.

Set the height
On the adjustable legs, loosen the locking bolts, slide the inner tube to the next hole and tighten. The bolts push the inner tube against the outer tube, so there is no play. Hole rows every 2"; turn the leg 90° to use the other face's holes for 1" steps.

Roll it, then lock it
On the caster option, step on the brake on each 5" caster once the table is where you want it. The fixed and adjustable legs stand on M20 leveling pads instead; anchor pads for bolting to the floor are available on request.
Construction
What it's made of
Machined plates on a machined frame. The 4' × 4' is built exactly like the largest Alpha; only the footprint and the leg count change.

Ø0.625" +.002/−.000 holes on 2.000" ±0.001 spacing, CNC-machined across the top and down every side. One grid on five faces.

Top plates
P20 tool steel
0.47" (12 mm) plates, heat-treated to 58–62 HRC, then nitrided. The hardest steel on the table is the face you work on.

Side plates
5-1/2" Q345B steel
50–55 HRC, 5-1/2" (140 mm) tall — a 6" (152 mm) edge with the top plate. The sides carry the 2" grid plus an extra row of holes offset between it.

CNC-machined frame
A welded tube frame with mounting blocks welded on, then machined as one piece so every plate seat and side block is true before a plate goes on.

Self-locating bolts
M12 self-locating bolts seat each plate on the frame. A plate drops back into the same position after a flip or a swap, and plates can be shifted along the frame.

±0.005" per 24" × 24"
±0.13 mm over any 610 × 610 mm patch of the assembled top. Precision ground plates, machined to hold the hole and spacing tolerances.

Powder-coated Q235 steel tube, 3.3" (84 mm) square, with Ø5/8" holes on 2" centers down the leg. Bolts to the frame with four M12 bolts through a 5.35" flange.

Alpha tables connect on the long or the short side into one continuous fixturing surface. Start with a 4' × 4' and add to it later.
Nitrided finish
What "nitrided"
means on this table
It is not a coating. Nitriding hardens the steel itself, in a thin layer at the surface, so there is nothing to chip, flake or wear through.
Nitriding is a heat treatment, not a paint or a plating. The finished plates are held at a moderate temperature — below the point where steel changes structure, so a machined plate stays flat — while nitrogen diffuses into the surface. The nitrogen locks into the steel as hard nitrides: a thin, very hard compound layer on top, and a tougher diffusion zone under it that supports the surface.
Alpha plates get the QPQ version of the process (quench–polish–quench): a salt-bath nitrocarburizing cycle, a polish, and an oxidizing quench that leaves a dark oxide skin over the hardened layer. That skin is the grey-black colour you see, and it is what gives the plates their corrosion resistance.

- DiffuseNitrogen (and a little carbon) diffuses into the surface and forms hard nitrides in the steel.

Questions, answered
Legs, tooling, the older round-leg tables and how to buy.
- How many legs does the 4' × 4' have?
- Four. The 4' × 4' is the only Alpha 5/8" size on four legs; the 6' × 3' and larger stand on six. Whichever leg option you pick, you get four of that leg.
- Which leg option should I choose?
- Start from the working height you want. The fixed legs give a 36.3" (A1) or 30.3" (A2) table. The adjustable legs cover 28.3"–38.3" in 1" steps (B1), and the caster version covers 33"–43" and rolls (C1). Fixed and adjustable legs stand on leveling pads; the casters have a foot brake.
- Can I change the legs later?
- Yes. All four legs bolt to the same flange pattern on the frame, and the square legs are sold on their own. Swap to casters or a different height without touching the tabletop.
- Do my existing 5/8" clamps and fixturing tools fit?
- Yes. The top, the sides and the legs all carry Ø5/8" holes on a 2" grid — the same pattern as every other BuildPro 5/8" table and every 5/8" clamp, stop, block and kit. Tools made for the 16 mm or 28 mm systems do not fit.
- What happens when the top wears?
- Flip the plate. The top is made of reversible, self-locating plates: undo the bolts, turn the worn plate 180° and bolt it back, and the other face becomes the working surface. Individual plates can also be replaced.
- Is the nitrided finish a coating that can wear off?
- No. Nitriding hardens the steel surface itself; nothing is applied on top, so there is no layer to chip or peel. The section above explains the process.
- Can I join it to another Alpha table?
- Yes. Alpha 5/8" tables connect edge to edge, on the long or the short side, into one continuous surface. Joining instructions are in the documents tab on this page.
- I have an older Alpha with yellow round legs. Does this apply?
- Partly. Current tables ship on square legs. If you have a legacy round-leg table, the optional Leg Brace Assembly TMLB48A is suggested for it.
- How do I buy it?
- By quote. Alpha 5/8" tables are not sold from the cart. Choose a leg option at the top of the page and request a quote; you can also quote the tabletop on its own (TA5-4848Q-N) or the legs on their own.
